Located high up on the banks of the Alabama River in Dallas County, Selma is a southern town known for being the largest historic district in the entire state.

Join historian, Terry Chestnut on a guided tour of some of Selma's most well known treasures as he takes you on a journey through America's history. Visit the St. James Hotel which was built in 1837 and overlooks the reknowned Edmund Pettus Bridge, the site of Bloody Sunday, an event which eventually delivered civiil rights to all African-Americans.

Your tour will take you through the neighborhoods and homes of Dr. F.D. Reese House, Rev. B.L. Tucker, and George Washington Carver, as well as some of the places where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped change history.

Meet Your Tour Guide

Selma Tour founder and guide, Terry Chestnut was born in Selma, Alabama in 19… He is the son of J.L. Chestnut, Jr, Alabama’s first black lawyer who represented Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as all of the freedom marchers in Alabama. J.L. Chestnut, Jr’s role was to handle the media and provide legal council to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and any marchers that had been arrested.

Throughout Terry’s childhood he was often with his father and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was even present on March 7, 1965, known in history as Bloody Sunday. The day when over 600 peaceful protestors walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama and faced brutal attacks by oncoming state troopers. The live footage of the violence shocked the nation and began the fight against racial injustice in America.

Today Terry leads guided tours of historical Selma, Alabama to visitors from all around the world. Taking his guests on a trip frozen in time, Selma Tour visits The St. James Hotel, The Edmund Pettus Bridge, slave auction site and Old Slavery Museum, George Washington Carver neighborhood, and many other important historical locations within Selma.
